Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis
ABOUT
Many people understand that poor dental hygiene produces bad breath and tooth decay. In addition, dental hygiene if properly cared for, may lead to a harmful infection. Continued buildup of bacteria inevitably leads to severe cases of gum diseases such as Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG).
ANUG get its alternate name of trench mouth from history as this disease was prevalent in front line soldiers during World War I, with an association of psychological stress and the large amounts of tobacco use in the armed services .
The ANUG is a painful infection of the gums. It is characterized by gum bleeding and the ulceration of the inter-papillae (the section of the gums between the teeth). Necrosis is the term used to describe death of tissue. ANUG affects the tissues of the gums. ANUG is different from more common chronic Peridontitis in that there is gingival pain with ANUG.
CAUSE
Tongue debris and poor oral hygiene causes a mixed bacterial infection resulting in ANUG. It may be dangerous in people with weakened immune system. The predisposing factors for ANUG are smoking, psychological stress and malnutrition where the protein intake is inadequate.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Because the diagnosis for ANUG is usually clinical, Dr. Noel suggests a visit to the dental office. The treatment for ANUG includes the debridement of areas of dead or dying gum tissues. Dentists usually prescribe antibiotics to kill the infection. An improved oral hygiene is necessary. We recommend frequent gentle tooth brushing with a soft brush and salt water rinses.
